Suburban Dream oil on canvas by Tatyana Kulida

60cm x 91cm

“They are all a meeting of objects and comforts that we are drawn towards in the modern life but with some overlay of the natural and the beautiful that comes with being outside the city rush. We live in the suburbs to keep in touch with nature and to slow our life down and see beyond the busy demands. All paintings are painted from life in natural light in effort to meditate and enjoy every moment as it is observed, flickering and vibrating. Life is not what happens to us but the tremendous happening around us that includes us.”
Tatyana Kulida

Tatyana is a Russian-born contemporary realist painter who studied and then taught painting at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. Tatyana works in her Wellington studio creating paintings and drawings inspired by Wellington people, flora and cultural objects. With a life long passion for collecting, Tatyana weaves together stories through antique objects and fabrics adding in fresh inspiration from her garden. Her still lives as well portraits are all painted from life, in natural light through hours of meditative observation. A student of traditional art making Tatyana still follows old masters’ practices in surface preparation creating her own supports, treating and stretching the linen and layering and sanding panels. Some pieces incorporate water guilding practices with hand finished frames and inclusion of burnished good which can require as many as 14 layers of material/process. Tatyana’s work is complex and thought out, resting on years of dedicated daily studio practice.
Tatyana is a prizewinner of the prestigious ARC student scholarship and the John F. and Ann Lee Stacey Scholarship granted to promising realist artists. Her work can be found in private collections in the UK, USA, Europe and Australasia as well as in the permanent collection of the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, Connecticut and Cameron Museum of Art, Wilmington, NC. Among her showings are The Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition 2014, London, UK; Chiaroscuro, New York, NY; and The Royal Society of British Painters Exhibition 2015 at the Mall Galleries in London where she has received the ‘The de László Award for Classical Draughtsmanship.’ She has been a finalist in the 2016 Parkin Drawing Prize and received the Nola Harford Memorial Award at the Peter Doig Cleveland National Art Awards ’17. Tatyana’s portrait commissions include notable Wellington residents including Mark Dunajchick, developer and Children’s hospital donor, and Sir Bill English.
