Wellington Suburban

A celebration of local by over 40 Wellington artists

13 October to 5 November 2021
Mitchell Studios’ large group exhibition for 2021 is a celebration of local by over 40 Wellington artists. Located in Khandallah Village, we are very much a suburban art gallery, but have been lucky enough to build a diverse whanau of artists from throughout the wider Wellington region. With a fairly open brief, Wellington Suburban gives our artists a chance to display their different takes on what the theme of ‘suburban’ means to them – something many of us have reconnected with or gained new appreciation for over 2020/21. This is a mixed media exhibition with participants working across a variety of disciplines from painting, drawing, photography and print-making, through to collage, ceramics, sculpture and weaving. We have filled the gallery with over 100 pieces of new, suburban-inspired art.
As with our Artistry group exhibition of 2020, Mitchell Studios would like to acknowledge and support the work of the Wellington Women’s Refuge and the Wellington Māori Women’s Refuge Te Whare Rokiroki by donating a percentage of gallery profits from Wellington Suburban to these organisations.

PICTURED: Phillip Waddington’s Social Distance Gnomes road sign is one of two created by the artist to cheer up the local community at this difficult time. The first road sign is installed in Upper Hutt with the full support of Mayor Wayne Guppy and has received much positive feedback. Phill is currently working on the two lower portions of this version of the sign which highlight the social distancing guidelines for gnomes (who, being European work in feet & inches) and humans who are now well used to the 2 metre distance rule! TENDERS are invited over $2,500. Please contact us for more information.
